swiss irontrail

It's almost time! Tomorrow we catch the train and head to the land of Heidi for the Swiss Irontrail. Derek and I committed to this adventure last Spring when I entered a drawing and won a free starting position and some awesome Mammut trail running gear (awesome). Four races will wind their way over high Alpine trails to finish in Davos, Switzerland this weekend. We will be running the shortest of the ultra-marathon distances, but an exciting introduction into this type of mountain race.

The T41 race begins at 2pm on Saturday, and covers  48.2 km, +2930m /−2850m.  That's 30 miles and a whole lot of elevation from Lenzerheide - Joch - Furgglis - Weisshorn - Arosa - Medergen - Strelapass - Davos. We've been obsessing over the forecast all week: will it rain? SNOW? Hoping for some sunshine. We won't be worried about heat this weekend, but beyond that, we'll just have to be ready for anything.

We plan to run together through all the ups and downs between the start and finish- a fun way to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It's been a great nine years, each one better than the one before, so here's to jumping into year ten with a real challenge!

The target finish for all races is Sunday by 4pm. That allows us a maximum of 26 hours to cover the distance. Studying the course profile, I hope we will finish sometime during the night, but I guess we'll just have to see how it goes...

Click here on Saturday (and potentially some of Sunday) for live updates on our position through GPS tracking. 3058 and 3149 are our start numbers. Happy trails!
