a break from winter

At the end of a rainy Tuesday we escaped to Heraklion airport, Crete and drove along the coast through the dark to arrive in Rethymno. After checking in to a beautiful old hotel in the old city, we wound through the pedestrian streets and sat under lemon trees for a late dinner of Cretan specialties, olives, tomatoes, stuffed aubergine. Despite the tiredness from travel, we were up early and excited to see the sun and blue sky. We spent the morning wandering Rethymno and walking along the coast, enjoying warmth for the first time since winter began. I even found vegan friendly chocolate gelato to spoon as we sauntered through the narrow streets.

After the gelato, we made the short trip south and inland to Lampini, our base for the week. We picked up a few groceries, enjoyed raki with the villa owner, and took a long walk in the hills among the sheep and goats.
