vík & vatnajökull

We woke to pack our tent in the drizzle again, and made our morning oatmeal while warming our hands around the tiny camp stove.  Not a bad view to wake to, even if we were a bit soggy. When it started raining harder, we took shelter in the kitchen of the nearby campground to wait it out. After a few instant coffees, we took advantage of a break in the rain to walk up the hill to the church and continued onto a wet-grassy path leading to the cliffs above town. The view was fantastic, and the weather was improving, but we had to make our way back down to catch the afternoon bus to Skaftafell.

We took quick showers at the campground and hung our socks and shoes to dry over a fence rail during a sudden few minutes of sunshine before we boarded the bus for a two hour ride through lumpy, unearthly-looking, lava fields and towards more rain.

When we arrived in Skaftafell, we grabbed (you guessed it) more coffee to wait out the rain again before setting up our tent and starting out on an evening hike. We made a short climb up to Svartifoss (black falls) and across to Sjónarnípa for an overlook of the Skaftafellsjökull glacier before looping back down to camp. The popular 8km hike takes just over 2 hours, but was nearly empty in the evening. A relaxing circular walk with rewarding views.
