corsica 4: another day at the beach

Today we headed for the beaches a little ways northwest. A rather long drive - a quick stop under autumn leaves and crisp, dark skies in the hilltop town of Sartene, passing through busy Propriano, and finally winding our way up and then back down to reach Campomoro.

We found a lonely little cove and sat for lunch. As the sun worked its way through the clouds, we ventured into the clear, pale water, and gathered stones for skipping. After lunchtime, a few more swimmers and snorkelers made their way along the beach, and we moved on to Roccapina.

After a brief roadside stop for candied almonds, eau de vie, and honey, we emerged from the curvy, brush-lined roads, at another stretch of coast. We found a lumpy dirt road down from the pavement, and bounced along the long, narrow, corridor to the white sand beach at Rocapina for the last bit of sun. Passing back through Figari, we stopped for some groceries, produce mostly, and wine. We made a flat-bread pizza with sundried tomatoes, green pepper and onion, and ate a salad under the single-bulb light dangling from one of the olive branches in the yard.

corsica 3: bonifacio

Monday morning woke us with distant tractors and donkeys. After breakfast, we drove to Bonifacio and walked along the cliff’s edge for views toward the town, and then down to a cove under the white stacks of rocks for lunch and exploring.

Wind and high waves came into the cove, so we climbed back up and headed for Piantarella where we found a quiet sandy beach with clear blue-green water. We went for a swim and watched the wind surfers.

On our way back, we stopped back in the town of Bonifacio to wander the thin streets and made our way down the stairs of Aragon in the fading light.

We pulled off the main road to a small beach just in time to see the sun sink into the sea, and continued back to the cottage for dinner and reading before bed.
