At the end of a rainy Tuesday we escaped to Heraklion airport, Crete and drove along the coast through the dark to arrive in Rethymno. After checking in to a beautiful old hotel in the old city, we wound through the pedestrian streets and sat under lemon trees for a late dinner of Cretan specialties, olives, tomatoes, stuffed aubergine. Despite the tiredness from travel, we were up early and excited to see the sun and blue sky. We spent the morning wandering Rethymno and walking along the coast, enjoying warmth for the first time since winter began. I even found vegan friendly chocolate gelato to spoon as we sauntered through the narrow streets.

snowshoe hike: les houches
It's a perfect day for snowshoeing in the Alps. It's April, but Les Houches is covered in fresh powder and gorgeous sunshine. I'm so happy we get to spend our last day with Emily trekking in the mountains. We snowshoed up to here:
We rode the telecabine up to Prarion and made two snowshoe loops with a break for lunch facing Mt. Blanc.
The first trail loop was mostly groomed for nordic skiing and snowshoeing and the second climbed more narrow (sometimes steep) trails up to a summit with an amazing 360 view.
We all finished the day refreshed with mountain air and sunshine. Time to make our way back to the train station already. We had a great weekend, and it was fantastic to hang out with my cousin up in the French Alps. Tons more photos of the weekend here.
